FRASER

The year was 1801 and in the Highlands of Scotland many of the large property owners were clearing their estates of the small tenants, with the view of turning their property into large sheep farms, a policy involving suffering and hardship to many tenant farm families.  There was a large immigration, principally from the Highlands of Scotland to Pictou, Nova Scotia from 1801-1805.

One of those families in 1801 from the Highlands was the Fraser’s of the Lovat Clan.  They were from Beauly, Inverness-shire. The family consisted of William and his wife Marion MacKinnon and their six children who were born in Scotland.  Three additional children would be born in Nova Scotia.**

The sea voyage was long and perilous.  They had to cross three thousand miles of ocean with young children to be fed and cared for.  The sea was rough and the sailing ship had to be caulked many times to stop leaks.  They were driven far off their course and after ninety-six days they arrived in the harbor of Pictou.

When they arrived in Pictou, most likely they were taken into a house of a previous settler and stayed there for a year or two until they were able to clear a lot, plant their crops and build a house.  It was not until 1811 that William and his son William Jr were given a grant of 420 acres in Big Brook, now called Lorne.

The first child of William and Marion born in Nova Scotia was James.  It is through James that our branch of Fraser’s started.  James and his wife were tailors and had their tailor shop in a town called Albion Mines which today is called Stellarton.  It was at Albion Mines that the sons of James first started to get their taste of working in a coal mine.

It was in the 1870’s that Allan Fraser, (the grandfather of Bill, Roy and Howard) went to Barclay Mountain in Bradford County, Pennsylvania and settled in the village of Carbon Run.
