heard it from my Father and Cousins. I have forgotten most of it. My
Great-Great-Grandfather (Jacob Powley) was a Lieutenant in a company
of Hussars the company were ? in the pay of Great Britten, they came
over and were stationed in New York State in the year 1756, he gave up
the Army and bought 800 acres of land in that State, he paid in gold for
it - At the War of Independance he took sides for the British, he had to
fly the country and was taken across the Lake by an Indian in a canoe,
his wife and his children were put in a boat and were told if they came
back they would be killed, the rebels confiscated all his property which
was considerable. The Government gave him a lot of land. He had three
boys, one of them my Grandfather William. I don't remember the names
of the other two. He had one girl who married a Francis Deerling
changed to Durling and then to Darling. I have heard my father<>called
him what a good man he was, all of the boys got land given to them. I

from home when he was 14 and did not come back till he was 21.
However he bought 11 acres and helped to build a saw mill for him when
he got married. My Grandmother Powley was a pure buck of a woman

don't remember her as she died when I was baby but my Grandfather
Powley I remember him well. He was a small <> man and he always had
a lump of Maple Sugar in his pocket for me although he died when I was
five yrs old at Marchmont and he was the first dead man I ever saw. He
was 74 yrs old and Uncle Peter took him to Kingston so he could lay

PROOF: from the Schenectady DRC Baptism Records: 4559 date: 3/7/99
child: William Berrit parents: Jacob Paul and Annatje Van Vorst witness:
Jacobus Reyly and Cataleyntje Van Vorst this is the only church record I
could find for this couple in either of the Schenectady or Albany Records.
By the 1770's other churches were opening in the area previously served
by the Schenectady RDC, and it's possible that they used one of them, I
don't have copies of any other records from that area. Steve Mabie Mar
